Kamarhatty Company Limited (KCL), set up in 1877 under British managing agency Jardine Henderson Ltd, is one of the oldest functioning composite jute mills in the world and is a source of employment for over 5000 and above people. It was this conviction that led Murlidhar Ratanlal Exports Ltd (MREL) to enter the world of Jute, the golden fibre in 1981.
Three decades ago MREL started its demonstrable track record with its first manufacturing operation - a specialty Bag Stitching Factory at Ghushuri, Howrah. Since then, the endeavour has been to set higher standards of excellence in Jute. The Group today is geared to set benchmarks in product quality, manufacturing processes, management systems and customer services.
Over time, the MREL network has grown and abilities have been proven in tough international markets. In 1994, the Group acquired Hastings Jute Mill at Rishra, which is one of the oldest mills in India on the banks of the Hooghly about 35 km away from Kolkata. Hastings has a capacity of over 150 MT and is a composite mill featuring divisions like batching, drawing, spinning, weaving, and finishing.
Building on steady success and consistent growth, MREL expanded its capacity and presence manifold. In quick succession it added several units in Hooghly district. India Jute Mill, Srerampore was acquired in 2007. It has a capacity in excess of 100 MT per day of jute products like hessian, sacking and value added Jute Diversified Products (JDPs). Subsequently, Gondalpara Jute Mill, Chandannagore, Hooghly was acquired in 2009, and it now has one of the best value added product manufacturing centres.
MREL’s reputation today is synonymous with jute! He has served as regional council member to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India of the Eastern Region for the period 2010-13. During his tenure as regional council member he served as Chairman (2011-12), Vice Chairman (2010-11) and Treasurer (2009-10) of Eastern India Regional Council of ICAI.
He is also serving as the Co-chairman of the Indirect Tax Committee of MCC Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Member of the Indirect Tax Committee of Bengal Chamber of Commerce. In ICAI, he has been Co-opted as member of Indirect Tax Committee for the year 2013-14. Apart from this, he has also served as a Chairman/Vice-Chairman/Member of various other committees of EIRC-ICAI during the period of last 10 years.
He has authored book on service tax titled "Service Tax Guide" (so far 8 Editions have been published), which was also reviewed by ICAI in the year 2010 as "A Useful Book and Very Good Source of Reference on Service Tax", the first book on Service Tax from Eastern India. His other book is titled as "Service Tax on Goods Transport Agency" (so far 3 Editions have been published).
He is a regular contributor of articles in various reputed journals, souvenirs, newsletters etc. including CA Journal, a house journal of ICAI published from New Delhi. He is the Editor of monthly service tax bulletin "Tax Talk".
