shuktara is a charity based in Kolkata which provides care for children and young people with disabilities who have no family. shuktara was started in 1999 by UK-born David Earp after he visited India and was profoundly moved by the plight of the disabled street children he met there.
As they were all getting older, David and Pappu Mishra, chairman of shuktara, were concerned about their future. So, with the help of the French restaurateur Alain Cojean and the Executive Pastry Chef of Fauchon in Paris, Fabien Rouillard, they decided to found Shuktara Cakes: a patisserie training centre to give the young people of shuktara vocational training and a job.
