In the editorial of the Statesman on 24th May, 1887 appeared that "Everyone will be glad to learn that the Lieutenant Governor has sanctioned the construction of the Calcutta Swimming Club on the site selected near Chandpal Ghat". It was on this day that the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal has sanctioned the construction of "CALCUTTA SWIMMING BATH", the forerunner of the existing – The Calcutta Swimming Club.
"The Swimming Bath" was founded by a group of Calcutta merchants headed by Messrs A.H.Willis and Busland to provide amenities for their young and junior assistants, who had neither the social standing nor the financial means necessary for membership of more important Clubs. The founders in their astute wisdom introduced the "CASH PAYMENT" rule which in those days of chits and credit slips was unique and intended to prevent the young members running into debt.
Calcutta Swimming Club, as we see it today, was actually founded by the Late Walter Davis, a partner of Hamilton & Company. He was the first Secretary of the Club. Since its inception the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal was the Head of the Club till 1923 when Mr. N. Hamilton was elected as it's first President.
The Club in the days immediately after the first WORLD WAR had only the inside Swimming Bath with dressing cubicles on the North side. Outside the northern side, there was a rectangular shaped TANK, a little smaller than the SWIMMING BATH . The sides of the Tank were built up by perhaps a couple of feet of earth banks held together by long grass. The present dressing rooms and the "porch" were added after 1926 and the rest of the buildings were cam up after the construction of the outside Pool, which was built in the 1930s.
From the mid 1920s onwards there were sessions for LADIES, two or three times a week for about an hour and mixed bathing was permitted on Friday evenings. Men used the dressing cubicles on the North side and the Women, the Gallery. There was a screen along the gallery rail to prevent those downstairs seeing too much or, for that matter anything. Of course, men had to wear "SLIPS" under the then costume regulations, while the ladies were completely covered all much too properly.
Catering was of course in its infancy and a Bovril and biscuits. The biscuits used to be wet by the time the old bearer brought them in a cracked cup and that was all there was to be had. The ladies eventually started the tea service.
The bath could be reserved by a member for private parties for a modest fee – many stories were told of these parties.
The Club celebrated its GOLDEN JUBILEE in 1937 and some of the commemorative Pewter TANKARDS presented by members are still with the Club. During the Second World War the Club offered relaxation to tired service Officers on leave from weary services at various theatres. In 1941, the Club was honoured by a FIGHTER AIRCRAFTbeing named "Calcutta Swimming Club" in appreciation of its contribution to the War efforts.
The period immediately after World War II was undoubtedly the most prosperous in the Club's history. There were over five thousand individual members and financial resources were plentiful. During this period the original 'LEAN TO' verandah was replaced by the larger brick structure, while both the Bar and Verandah were air-conditioned.
In 1964, Maharaja of CoochBehar was inducted as the First INDIAN MEMBER. Again it was in 1976, Late P.T. Basu was elected as the First INDIAN PRESIDENT of the Club. The Club celebrated its CENTENARY in 1985. The Club has been continuously undergoing major renovations / upgradation to enhance the facilities to its members.
Calcutta Chamber of Trade has completed twenty five (25) glorious years and now has become one of the largest trade bodies having a membership strength of about 600 members. It started 25 years ago when traders of the area felt it necessary to create a platform to draw the attention of the Govt and other administrative bodies towards the problems faced by traders in general. growing antisocial activities and perennial labour problems in the area. Thus N. S. Road General Traders Association was born on 11th November 1983. And in the years to follow, as the area of operation and activities grew and diversified, the name was changed to Calcutta Chamber of Trade on 14' October 1991. Main objectives of the Chamber thus formed were :

To organise deputations to Central & State Government and to other public bodies to highlight the burning issues in the interest of trade and commerce.
To act as a mediator in case of any dispute relating to tenancy, labour, taxation etc.
lo organise seminars and discussions for diffusion of knowledge amongst traders.
To publish useful literature and booklets relating to the general interest of members.
To discharge social obligations as and when exigencies arise.
Whenever there is any change in fiscal policies of the Government, changes in Tax structure, introduction of new taxes and levies, members are informed by means of trade circulars. The Chamber is also active in sending pre-budget memoranda to Central and State Governments which receives due importance and recognition from the respective ministries.
To highlight the ill effects of any proposed Taxes and Levies the memoranda are sent to the respective ministries followed by deputations.
Some of the success stories include revocation of Way-Bill by the Government of West Bengal for Exports, Internal movement of goods within the state and on personal carriage of' goods; implementation of our suggestions in conversion of the Multi-Point System of Taxation to Single Point for 530 commodities; a complete overhaul of West Bengal Premises Tenancy Act withdrawal of Turnover Tax, trade - friendly changes in the Value Added Tax.
Apart from continuing with the present activities which are generally trade and business oriented, the Chamber is planning to do some social service for the betterment of society, at large. Rather than just being a problem solving body Calcutta Chamber of Trade has arduously built a learn of dedicated workers, in order to lay the foundation for a better tomorrow.

BURNPUR CEMENT LIMITED is one of the most reputed and largest integrated cement companies in eastern region. Burnpur Cement Ltd. was originally incorporated on 19th June, 1986 as Ashoka Concrete and Allied Industries Pvt. Ltd. The name of the Company was changed to Burnpur Cement Pvt. Ltd. on 18th September, 2001. The company was subsequently converted to public limited company to Burnpur Cement Ltd. on 12th November 2001 and became a closely held unlisted company. It is enlisted with National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
It is but fitting to recapture the moments of agony and ecstasy experienced by Late Ramawatar Gutgutia, the Founder CMD of the Company, who undertook to shape the destiny of Burnpur Cement. BCL started its operations in the cement industry in October 1991 & a plant was set up in Asansol, West Bengal to produce Portland Slag Cement (IS 455:1989). Expansion of facilities over the years has resulted to a capacity of 0.3 million metric tonnes per annum, from its Asansol Unit.
BCL has set up an integrated cement plant at Patratu, Jharkhand with an installed capacity of 0.3 million metric tonnes per annum with an investment of about 300 Crores. The first phase of our Integrated Cement Plant, has started its commercial production, which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Sri Raghubar Das. The plant will be able to produce the three most commonly used types of cement i.e. OPC, PPC and PSC. The Plant has been set with the most sophisticated Technology being used throughout the World for making Clinker i.e. Rotary Kiln Dry Process Technology. This Environment friendly Technology reduces the consumption of power and water, and enhances the Quality of Clinker & Cement.

Late Dr. Krishna Kumar Birla, son of legendary Late Syt. Ghanshyam Das Birla was born in Pilani, Rajasthan, on 12th October 1918. He joined the Sugar Industry in the year 1940 and was amongst the founder member of Indian Sugar Industry. He was the Chairman of Upper Ganges Sugar & Industries Ltd., The Oudh Sugar Mills Ltd. and Gobind Sugar Mills Ltd and was appointed the Chairman – Emeritus of all these companies in the year 2002 and remained so till his death in the year 2008.
Over the years, Dr. Birla had established one of India's well known business conglomerate through his brilliance in entrepreneurial genius and sheer hard work. He nurtured the K. K. Birla Group as one of the most respected Business Houses in India. The Group covers a wide canvas with interest in sugar, fertilizers, media, textiles, shipping, engineering, financial services, furniture, information technology, plantations and infrastructure sectors. One of his greatest achievements has been to earn the trust of his millions of shareholders, employees and customers, which has played a crucial role in his phenomenal growth.
Dr. Birla was a Member of Rajya Sabha for 18 consecutive years. In the year 1961, he was elected Sheriff of Calcutta and in the year 1997, he was conferred Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by Pondichery University. He had chaired a number of Chambers of Commerce such as Indian Sugar Mills Association, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Indian Chamber of Commerce and many such prominent organizations. His numerous responsibilities include the Trusteeship of the Birla Education Trust, which runs a number of schools and institutions in the country offering subsidized education, and Chairmanship of the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) at Pilani and Dubai. Dr. Birla had established K.K. Birla Foundation which has instituted annual awards for excellence in Indian literature, scientific research, Indian philosophy etc. and K.K. Birla Academy to undertake research on scientific, cultural and historical subjects.
Late Dr. K. K Birla was an outstanding visionary, a business leader par excellence and a builder of modern educational and scientific institutions. He was a multi-dimensional industrialist, a caring philanthropist, an astute parliamentarian and an eminent scholar. He made an indelible mark in the field of industry, education, politics, art and culture. Late Dr. K. K Birla had a rare distinction of being a multi faceted personality but above all he was a humble humanist. The beautiful Radhakrishna Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in Kolkata and the G.D. Birla Sabhagar in Kolkata are amongst his many social contributions bearing testimony to his self effacing humanity.

Sugarcane is a perennial grass in the Poaceae family and is cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions for the sucrose that is found in its stems. It requires a frost-free climate with sufficient rainfall during the growing season to make full use of the plant's great growth potential. The crop is harvested mechanically or by hand, chopped into lengths and conveyed rapidly to the processing plant. Here it is either milled and the juice extracted with water or the sugar is extracted by diffusion. The juice is then purified with lime and heated to kill enzymes.
The resulting thin syrup is then concentrated in a series of evaporators and then further water is removed by way of evaporation process in vacuum containers The resulting supersaturated solution is seeded with sugar crystals and the sugar crystallizes out and is separated from the fluid and dried. The crystals of raw sugar have a sticky brown coating and can either be used as they are or can be bleached by sulphur dioxide or treated in a carbonation process to produce a whiter product.
